Mathilde Decisions

Imagine sitting in your living room and keep on telling yourself that you will never be like the rich girl. You are going to be poor for the rest of your life. Most people feel sorry for themselves. In the story ‘’The Necklace’’ By Guy De Maupassant Mathilde later changes throughout the story and learns to love herself and to be grateful. Mathilde reveals herself by in the beginning she was a miserable person then she turned into someone who is independent and grateful for her life.
Mathilde reveals herself by showing she is insecure. She is lazy but wants to be like the hard working rich girls. On the other hand, her husband works very hard so he can earn all of the items he wants. He is successful in life unlike his wife. This means that in order to be successful she has to be hard working not sit around complaining and being miserable. Even though Mathilde is poor she can get a job and become a rich girl so she can have her dream come true. In the text it states ‘’she had no clothes, no jewels, nothing.’’ This proves that she is poor and doesn’t have that much money. She loves all of the fancy clothing rich girls wear and the jewelry they get. Instead of her trying to keep up with her dreams of becoming a rich girl, she is lazy and stubborn and does nothing about it.
Now Mathilde got the invitation to the ball from her husband she didn’t want to go. The reason she didn’t want to go was because she was poor. In the text, it reveals ‘’ Why. I thought you would be pleased.’’ This explains that she wasn’t grateful that her husband got an invitation for her and him. All of the rich girls that she dreams of being would be at the ball. She had a dress that she wore to church that is fancy enough to wear to the ball. Instead, Mathilde insisted on having a better dress for the ball. Her husband bought her dress so she can go. Mathlde was slowly turning into one of the rich girls. She has a dress and should be grateful for all the purchases he husband buys for her to make her happy.
Before she and her husband went to the ball she was miserable for 3 days. Her husband was concerned. In the text it shows ‘’I’m utterly miserable at not having any jewels, not a single stone, to wear. I shall look like absolutely no one. I would rather not go to the party.’’ Her husband explains that she is beautiful and she should go to the ball. She didn’t think the feedback was helpful. Mathilde was sorry for herself. They both eventually got to the ball. Mathilde borrowed a diamond necklace from a rich girl at the ball because she wanted to fit in perfectly. Later on, Mathilde lost the necklace. The owner of the necklace had no idea it was gone until she noticed later. In the text it says ‘’ They searched in the folds of her dress, in the folds of her coat, in the pockets, everywhere. They could not find it.’’ They lost hope she felt guilty, hopeless, humiliated. She then realized she needed to replace the necklace. She can’t keep this missing necklace to the past and forget about it. Mathilde for the past ten years made money and then put all of her money that she earned to the missing necklace. Both the owner and Mathilde came face to face and Mathilde confessed that she lost the necklace for 10 years. She paid it off over the years with a look alike. The owner was speechless. Mathilde learned to do what is best for her and others. She lost a valuable that was owned by someone else. She worked hard and changed herself to be more happy and love herself.
In conclusion, Mathilde learns along the way to be herself. She should be grateful for her independence she grew, and the life she was given. Mathilde made decisions that could impact her life, she fixed her mistakes and changed her personality for the better.
